1874: the death of William Charles Lunalilo, who has no heirs, marks the end of the Kamehameha dynasty. David Kalakaua is elected and succeeds Lunalilo.

1878: Lydia Kamakaeha (who will become Queen Liliuokalani) writes the song “Aloha ‘Oe”.

1881: King Kalakaua becomes the first monarch in history to sail around the world.

1882: completion of the Iolani Palace, the official residence of the Hawaiian monarchs. The palace is ahead of its time. It is equipped with the most efficient equipment of the time, even before the White House and Buckingham Palace. It includes Hawaii’s first electric lights, interior plumbing and even a phone.

1887: signature of the 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii; King Kalakaua and the Hawaiian monarchy lose much of their power to the legislature and cabinet. It will be renamed Bayonet Constitution, the king having folded under the constraint of a bayonet.

1889: Joseph Kekuku, from Laie, Oahu, invents the “steel guitar” (Hawaiian guitar), which corresponds to a particular way of playing. He then moved to the American continent to share his music with the rest of the world. The style that derives from the “steel guitar” meets a real success in the same way as the country music, and still listens today.

1891: death of King David Kalakaua and sacrament of Queen Liliuokalani.

1893: Beginning of the fall of the kingdom of Hawaii. Queen Liliuokalani is under house arrest in Iolani Palace, Honolulu.

1901: Waikiki’s first hotel, the Moana Hotel, opens on March 11th. He is affectionately nicknamed “the first lady of Waikiki”.

1917: Death of Queen Liliuokakani, the last sovereign of the kingdom of Hawaii.

1941: December 7, 1941, in full World War II, the Japanese attack by surprise Pearl Harbor, on Oahu.

1945: On September 2, 1945, Japan signs its unconditional surrender on the battleship USS Missouri. Although the signature was not made in Pearl Harbor, the USS Missouri, now a museum, is on the Pearl Harbor memorial site, which offers tourists from around the world various activities and tours.
